Perhaps one of the most satisfying ways of going green is to have about ten chickens on your little piece of land. Not only do they give you plenty of eggs for the household, but they will eat unwanted insects and all your scraps that don't go into the compost pile. They also provide you with a good quality manure for your garden. We had chickens for many years, and our children usually named each one; therefore, we only used them for eggs and not dinner. I don't think they would have eaten "lil red hen" or "speck".
